Activity description:
The EUROSCOLA program in Strasbourg is aimed at students from all over Europe, giving them the opportunity to experience European parliamentary democracy first-hand.
Our high school has received an invitation to do so on November 16, 2023.
24 Junior Ambassadors from the European Parliament's EPAS School-Ambassador Program and two teachers took part on Thursday in a debate on "Climate change", a topic that fits LTMEțs teachers and students like a glove as they have been campaigning for years to keep the environment healthy. Each junior ambassador identified solutions to mitigate and halt global warming, what we can change for the better in agriculture, construction, industry, legislation and transportation, as well as what LTME's medium and long-term environmental goals are.
The program of activities ran from 8.00-16.00 in the hemicycle of the European Parliament. In the morning, the junior ambassadors were divided into heterogeneous groups, interacting with students from other countries, giving them the opportunity to socialize and disseminate information on climate change. A video was shown, which featured a message from Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, covering contemporary issues ranging from environmental to legislative issues. This was followed by a Q&A session with German Vice-President Nicola Beer. The students asked her questions on a variety of topics: curiosities about the role of the European Parliament, climate change solutions, the solutions being imposed, how we can save the planet and what we could do as European citizens to help achieve climate neutrality and stop global warming.
This was followed by an interview with Ms. Aleyda Hernandez Laviades who answered questions on industry, energy, research and the role of the European Parliament. It was a very interesting discussion as she specialized in these areas. Again, the answers were complex, in this way also alerting the audience to climate change. This part of the session was the most interesting for the students: they had the chance to be MEPs for an hour. They could vote on proposed amendments, come up with proposals.
The penultimate part of the event consisted of a debate on the same global warming theme. Junior ambassadors worked with students from other countries. Romania was in the "Undecided" group, which proved quite difficult. They analyzed each proposed amendment in detail and only then took the decision they thought was the right one.
The last part also consisted of a kind of debate, focusing on the values of Europe and the elections. The students presented one of the most important EU values - equality. Ana Sabrina Bularca from class XI B also managed a direct intervention on this topic, highlighting the importance of gender equality.
Results: We interacted with leading personalities from the EP, managed to discuss environmental issues and identify viable solutions to mitigate global warming. Solutions exist! The important thing is to adopt them!
